Leaving home and going away to university presents many opportunities to grow as a person and have new experiences. During this time, many students find their passion or purpose in life through adventures. They don’t have to be dangerous or long lasting to provide great benefits to your life now and your life in the future. Here are just a few adventures that you should add to your university bucket list.
Finding an Outside Pursuit
Yes, university is time consuming and will take up most of your time. However, to really become a well-rounded individual, you should have something to pursue outside the classroom. Maybe you’re a maths major, but you take a few music classes on the side. Maybe you travel to the next city to tutor kids or photograph nature. It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as it’s something you feel passionate about and that you enjoy. Having this respite outside your university life will make your time on campus more enjoyable and will help you find other ways to grow and learn.
Run for a Leadership Position
This might be the only time in your life when you will have time and desire to campaign for something. Maybe it’s becoming the president of a small campus club or maybe it’s running for a political position for students. Holding this position of leadership will expand your knowledge and skill set and give you a name at school. This is a great way to open yourself up to new friendships or career opportunities. If nothing else, it’s something fun and memorable to define your years in university.
Participate in a Protest
This is a short-lived adventure but is almost considered a rite of passage in university. The trick to making this a meaningful adventure is to choose a topic or event to protest that really matters to you. Don’t show up at a protest if you don’t know what’s going on, just to say you were there. If you truly want to make a change in the world and have your voice heard, you’ve got to do it for a cause you believe in. Extra points if you make a sign and get your picture featured in the campus newspaper.
Study Abroad
There are a multitude of places to see outside of Australia. By participating in a study abroad program, you have the opportunity to see more of the world and add to your experience in university. Most of these programs last for a semester and give you the chance to contribute to your major while also adding a whole new set of skills to the mix. You’ll get to meet new people and find new opportunities that will make your university years memorable. Who knows what could happen?
Don’t Go Home for the Holidays
It can be very tempting to head home every time there is a break from classes. But you would be amazed at what an adventure it is to stay on campus when everyone else is gone. You’ll see your school in a whole new light and may just meet your soulmate, someone you would never run into otherwise. You might also consider spending the holidays with a friend or inviting your family to come to you. Getting out of your routine is always an adventure and always a great way to experience something new.
University is a time of self-discovery and a time when most students learn a whole wealth of knowledge. All of that doesn’t have to occur in the classroom. Real life offers a plethora of chances to learn and build a life that you love and are proud of. Adventures are something that should be part of your everyday life, no matter what age you are or what stage you’re in. But university is a prime time to have some adventures that will give you memories for a lifetime. So get out there and find some for yourself.
